 Galapagos Islands
Ecuador
One of the original 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Galapa- gos Islands are 620 miles off the coast of South America in the Pacific Ocean. These 19 islands, only 4 of which are inhabited, were formed by continual seismic and volcanic activity, with each one being the tip of an underwater volcano – those in the west still being active. It is believed that the extremely isolation of the islands has led to the de- velopment of numerous, unusual animal and plant life. For the avid diver, these islands are the place to visit. With one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world, divers can experience species and geograph- ical formations unlike any other. UNESCO says that the islands are truly a unique living museum and showcase of ecological evolution.
